MACKEYVILLE — Upgrade these chainsaws for the 8th annual Hooskow Chainsaw Carver event.

The annual carving event will be held at the Clinton County Outdoor Market from tomorrow to Saturday night.

Hooskow was founded by professional woodcarver Jeffery Donoughe. To make sure this is a unique name unique to the event, he said they named it Hooskow. He added that the name derives from the word "hoosegow", which is a slang term for prisons. Since the wood carving event was once held in Restless Oaks next to the Clinton County Correctional Facility, the name is appropriate.

"We started with Restless Oaks, we worked there for six years, but grew from there," Donau said.

Initially, Hooskow was composed of about 10 engravers in the early days. However, now the event has received more than 60 guest engravers from all over the country, including Texas, Maine, Colorado, etc.

"We are very close to each other," Dono added.

In addition to live carving performances, there will be food and craft suppliers, wood carving sales, door prizes and events within three days. The engraving activities will include fast engraving, predetermined speed engraving, and constant-moving engravers' pits.

“We will do small things throughout the day, such as carving demonstrations for charity. Between Thursday and Saturday, six to eight people will sculpt and create something together,” Dono said.

Funds raised from the event will be donated to the 40&8 Veterans Organization and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Hooskow provides trees, mainly white pine, for carvers to sink the chainsaw into them and create wonderful things from them.

"People will make things from bears to frogs, from big feet to moose," Dono said.

Many sculptures created within three days will be auctioned on Saturday. The auction will be held at 2 pm on Saturday. Friday and Saturday at 7pm, music guest Travis Barner aka "Fat Man" will perform.

Food suppliers will include Scott's Roasting, Cogan Concession, JB Feasties, Twilight Diner, Up the Crick and more.
